It can be caused by formation of biofilms or by the formation of metabolic by-products which create the right electrochemical conditions for corrosion of the metal substrates. This type of corrosion is ubiquitous, being microorganisms able to thrive with or without oxygen (i.e., aerobic and anaerobic conditions).
